Abstract
Purpose : To evaluate the risk factors for cardiovascular disease according to epiretinal membrane (macular region) in Korean adults over 40 years of age.

Methods : Cardiovascular diseases related to the epiretinal membrane (macular region), age, gender and body mass index in subjects aged over 40 years who underwent a health survey and ophthalmic examination of the 7th period of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2016-2018). Logistic regression analysis was performed by correcting for sociological factors such as average monthly household income, education level, current smoking rate and monthly drinking rate, and the significance level was set to less than 0.050.

Results : The prevalence of epiretinal membrane in those over 40 years of age was 7.94% (527 patients), which was shown 3.31% (220 patients) in males and 4.62% (307 patients) in females. The odds ratio (OR) of the epiretinal membrane according to age increased by 1.095 times (p<0.001) when the age increased by 1 year (p<0.001), and the odds ratio (OR) of the epiretinal membrane was 1.268 times higher in people with high blood pressure than those without that. There were differences (p=0.024),

Conclusion : After adjusting for sociological factors in the relationship between the epiretinal membrane and cardiovascular disease, a statistically significant association was confirmed with age and hypertension, while no significant association was confirmed between stroke, myocardial infarction and angina. This is expected to require retinal-related examinations when ophthalmologic examination and refraction examination are performed in adults over 40 years of age and those with hypertension.
